The weekend has arrived!
This will be a post that is out of usual pattern, but I’m excited to share this large piece of the world of my recipe creation 🙂
Almost 8 months ago, I chose to make an investment in my health.
In my vision of health, it all begins with the food. There is so much truth in the statement, “you are what you eat!” The beauty of this, is that it not only begins with what you eat, but also what you DRINK.
I’ve spent the past 7 years purchasing organic produce, making smoothies, evaluating ingredients. Three out of the 7 years have been spent making 85% of the foods I consume, simply because the quality of food available to us is just not good enough!
Gratefully, we have an option to choose the quality of our foods, including the water we drink.
Have you ever thought about whats involved beyond purchasing your produce from the grocery or farmers market? What type of soil is it grown in, or what type of water is used for hydrating the crop?
Most of the produce grown in the US is infiltrated with pesticides and herbicides in order to protect the foods from bugs and for preservation reasons. This is no new news to us.
Beyond that, the soil our produce is grown in is severely mineral deficient, and might as well be crushed drywall mixed with cardboard. I’m sorry to sound like a “Debbie downer,” but this is the closest perspective I can relate U.S soil to! The soil is dead, polluted, dehydrated, and mineral deficient.
When purchasing organic produce, there’s a greater light and enhancement in the quality our health, but there are still toxic substances to be leery of, along with still being grown in pour quality soil, leading to mineraly deficient crop.
Chronic health effects may occur years after even minimal exposure to pesticides in the environment, or result from the pesticide residues which we ingest through our food and water. A July 2007 study conducted by researchers at the Public Health Institute, the California Department of Health Services, and the UC Berkeley School of Public Health found a sixfold increase in risk factor for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) for children of women who were exposed to organochlorine pesticides.
Moreover, we actually know less about the effects of “natural” pesticides. Conventional “synthetic” pesticides are highly regulated and have been for some time. We know that any remaining pesticide residues on both conventional and organic produce aren’t harmful to consumers. But, writes agricultural technologist Steve Savage, “we still have no real data about the most likely pesticide residues that occur on organic crops and we are unlikely to get any.”
Scientists can examine pesticides before they are sprayed on fields, however. And what do these analyses show?
“Organic pesticides that are studied have been found to be as toxic as synthetic pesticides,” Steven Novella, president and co-founder of the New England Skeptical Society, recently wrote.
The above statements are the exact reason for presoaking all of my foods. Since I’ve been using my Kangen to soak my foods, I have literally seen these pesticidal residues in slimy form (yes even from organic produce), and I am so grateful to be removing them from the surfaces of my produce!
What about the water? Can I drink my tap water without a filter?
NO! Please, don’t.
Bottled waters have been disclosed to be filled with tap water. Aside from the fact, plastics leach chemicals, and we know our bodies don’t like that! Especially the thyroid.
All plastic bottles, when reused, are subjected to high levels of bacteria due to contact with hands and mouths, creating moist conditions that encourage bacteria growth. According to a study of water bottles at one elementary school, the bacteria levels were high enough that health officials would have issued boil-water advisories had the samples come from the tap (see References 6). Water bottles can be washed with warm soapy water and allowed to dry before being reused. But the process of washing and agitation has been shown to damage the structure of the bottle, causing release of chemical compounds (see References 3).
PET and BPA plastics are the most common types of containers for water and other drinks. Both PET plastics and BPA plastics have been shown to leach over time. PET plastics tend to leach when exposed to realistic though extreme conditions, such as exposure to sunlight, heat and storage time (see References 4). The Harvard School of Public Health has shown that exposure to BPA can interfere with reproductive development in animals. It has also been linked with cardiovascular disease and diabetes in humans (see References 3).

Is there a love story with my Kangen?
About 8 months ago, I began soaking my produce, legumes, nuts, & seeds in an alkaline water source by Kangen. Previously, I used spring water that I’ll keep as anonymous by name:)
While using spring water for close to two years, I became very familiar with the amount of soaking time that was needed for whatever I would be food-prepping.
After the first week of using my Kangen, I was clearly able to see the difference in vibrancy, texture, flavor, and freshness in my all of the foods I was using on a daily basis. As I could visually see hydration within my food from soaking, they required LESS cook time.
This is what blew my mind, and really reinforced any doubts I had towards investing in this unit.
With the amount of food prep that goes down in my kitchen, it’s imporant for me to use the least amount of heat with my foods. Everything I previously cooked without alkaline water was cooked on low for longer periods of time to prevent high heat exposure, which damages the foods, creating digestive leukocytosis.
Digestive leukocytosis resembles a stress response to infection or trauma. This increase in white blood cells had been observed by others but was thought to be a normal reaction to eating. At The Institute of Chemical Chemistry, Kouchakoff and others found that unaltered food (food that was raw or heated at very low temperatures) did not cause this immune reaction. They found that only food heated at very high temperatures or food that was processed and refined caused this rise in white blood cells.
Since I’ve been soaking & hydrating my foods before exposing them to any heat, I can easily say that my cook time has been cut in half, at least! I really began to see this in effect when I made my first batch of lentils and split pea soup!
Another great visual validation for my investment into my health?
When soaking my nuts, seeds, produce, or dried fruits, I love to see the nasty gunk and gross oily substance that rises to the surface. There’s a natural satisfaction in taking the time to prepare cleaner foods.
In the time I’ve spend prepping foods, I hadn’t seen this large amount of slime remove itself from dried fruits in such a rapid time frame.
The photos below are organic raisins soaking in extremely alkaline water with a pH of 11.0.
All of the nastiness that you see on the surface of the water removed itself from the raisins within less than 5 minutes.

Was this slimy substance there before when using my previous spring water?
Yes. However, not nearly as much, as thick, or as quick as the above of a film seen in the above photos.
What about your wilted or dehydrated produce?
There’s always been the method of shocking your veggies with cold water to bring them back to life. Once again, I love having the ability to soak them in the proper pH to maximize their hydration level!
Again, this was another validation for me when I began to clearly see my food quality greatly enhance by using clean source of alkaline, hydrating water. Not to mention cutting down the soaking time 🙂
What else do I use it for to support my lifestyle?
I’ve eliminated home cleaning products that contain synthetic fragrance.
As I’ve weeded out toxins from my lifestyle (body care products, cleaning supplies, toxic foods, no processed oil consumption, & clean drinking water), my sensetivity to fragrance has greatly increased. My nose can detect odors like no other, specifically synthetics, and its really quite irritating!
Food prepping can become quite messy. It always leaves sticky, crummy, and greasy counter tops. I LOVE the fact that I no longer need to purchase surface cleaner, and can simply use my acidic water (2.7 pH) setting with reinforcing anti-bacterial essential oil of lavender to clean the tops of my counter! This really includes any counter top or floor 🙂 I usually will just fill a large spray bottle with acidic water and just the right amount of Lavender oil 🙂
Anything else I use it for?
Yes! I love using the beauty aspect of this water! There’s a setting that adjusts to the proper acid alkaline (6.0 pH) setting for the skin 🙂 I use “Beauty Water” for mixing my clay masks for facial application. It reinforces the depth and delivery of the mask while also hydrating the tissue!
Listen to this, I even use it for teeth brushing and mouth rinsing! How? Just by using the acid water 🙂 It disinfects the entire mouth! Just do not swallow 🙂
The Kangen system is definitely a multi-purpose technology that I have seen work through my own experimentation.
I’d like to honestly say that I was a huge skeptic of this technology before I literally had the machine hooked up within my home, ready for use. I’m sharing it with you because I’ve seen its benefits in effect on a daily basis simply in my food prep! It tastes great, I feel great, and I have absolutely no complaints!
It’s made life much less hectic when it comes to purchasing water, and even pleases my monthly grocery budget for what I USED to spend on drinking water! When you prep your own foods, trust me, you move through water SO quickly!
