We’re Living In A World Of POPs.

Shopping for organic foods goes far beyond just “eating clean.”

In today’s world, it literally takes time and money to eat well by avoiding toxic foods in efforts to be healthy.

We’ve all heard people say, “Buy organic, its better for you!” Purchasing organic foods is a giant leap forward towards greater health, and greatly contributes to the elimination of toxins from flooding the tissues of the body.

The primary reason I (and most others that purchase organic) choose to purchase organic produce from the grocery store or farmers market is to avoid any risk of exposure to chemicals that may have been sprayed on or around my food in their growing environments. Our foods are LOADED with chemicals.

Yes, the more you purchase organic foods, the more you are committing to your health!

How can you continue to be self motivated in your dedication to your health? How can you contribute to motivating others to join the health movement with you?

As I’ve experienced this journey to optimal health, I’ve learned that facts are essential when conveying information to family, friends, and people you may just be simply engaging with in friendly ( or maybe educational) conversation.

Lets get to the facts!

What are these chemicals used on our food?

There’s a general name for these chemicals we’re exposed to on a daily basis. They’re called POPs.

Persistent Organic Pollutants.

POPS: Synthetic inorganic chemicals that are intentionally and non-intentionally released. Some of them are in the form of pesticides, and others are emitted from specific industrial processes and events. When these chemicals reach contact with the environment, it can take them up to centuries to no longer be active.

POPs originated during World War II to help with industrial production during World War II. When these toxic chemicals were put you use, they were seen to greatly affect the control of pests, crops, & disease within the farming industry. This served as a great benefit for the farming industry, as these chemicals offered great assistance in helping the crops to survive invasion and infestation of other insects that may try to overtake them.

During this time, other chemicals were produced through combustion, called Dioxins, aka DDT. This specific pesticide has been the highlight of them all, as it has greatly contributed to negative effects on humans and the world we live in.

What harmful effects can DDT have on us?

  • Probable human carcinogen
  • Damages the liver
  • Temporarily damages the nervous system
  • Reduces reproductive success
  • Can cause liver cancer
  • Damages reproductive system

How are we exposed to DDT?

  • By eating contaminated fish and shellfish
  • Infants may be exposed through breast milk
  • By eating imported food directly exposed to DDT
  • By eating crops grown in contaminated soil

Where can DDT be found?

Potential Sources to our Environment: 

  • DDT in soil can be absorbed by some growing plants and by the animals or people who eat those plants
  • DDT in water is absorbed by fish and shellfish in those waterways
  • Atmospheric deposition
  • Soil and sediment runoff
  • Improper use and disposal

Thankfully, the dilemma of DDT has contributed to the formation of The Stockholm Convention, an organization that helps to prevent exposure and harm from POPs to human and wildlife.

‘What these chemicals have in common,’ states the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers Union (ICEM),

is their high toxicity and ability to accumulate in the fatty tissue of animals and humans, concentrate in the food chain and be extremely long-lived in soil and water.’

What are the names of the POPs used in the pesticides that contaminate the foods we eat?  Where are they mostly used? How can they affect your health?

Endrin

  • Is an insecticide used over crop fields like cotton & grains. Endrin is also used in rodenticide (rodent killer) as a method of controlling field mice within the crops. This pesticide has been detected in fresh Arctic waters.

Heptachlor

  • It’s a non-systemic stomach and contact insecticide that’s used against soil insects and termintes. Heptachlore is very volatile, and can definitely be expected to make its way into the atmosphere. Its most common way of transportation is through food & water. If drank in specific amounts, it has the ability to contribute to liver damage.

Mirex

  • A stomach insecticide that has been used world wide to kill insects in South America, South Africa, USA, & Hawaiian Islands. It has also been used as a fire retardant in plastics, rubber, paint paper and electrical goods. The main route of exposure of mirex to the general population is through food:
    • Meat, fish and wild caught fish

Toxaphene

  • A nonsystemic and contact pesticide that has been primarily used on cotton, cereal grains, fruits, nuts and vegetables. It’s also been used to control ticks and mites in livestock. Toxaphene has been in use since 1949 and was the most widely used insecticide in the USA in 1975. Toxaphene is highly insoluble (not able to dissolve) in water, and has a half-life in soil of up to 12 years. Higher concentrations have been found in aquatic organisms, and is also known to be transported throughout the atmosphere.

Exposure to these chemicals can be extremely detrimental to environmental, human, & animal health. Research states that POPs can even affect an unborn child (see study) before the child is even conceived!Dioxin-Violence-Jonik

Aside from pesticides used within the food system that affect us as humans, there are other types of chemicals used within industrial processes that we’re exposed to just as consistently, through the air we breath every second, of every minute, of every day…

PCB’s (Polychlorinated biphenyls): 

The World Health Organization states:

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are mixtures of chlorinated hydrocarbons that have been used extensively since 1930 in a variety of industrial uses, including as dielectrics in transformers and large capacitors, as heat exchange fluids, as paint additives, in carbonless copy paper and in plastics.

There are 209 possible PCBs. PCBs in the environment may be expected to associate with the organic components of soils, sediments and biological tissues, or with dissolved organic carbon in aquatic systems, rather than being in solution in water. Association between elevated exposure to PCB mixtures and alterations in liver enzymes, hepatomegaly, and dermatological effects such as rashes and acne has been reported.

HCB (Hexachlorobenzene): 

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is a fungicide that was first introduced in 1945 for seed treatment, especially for control of bunt of wheat.The most notable episode involving the effects of HCB on humans involved the ingestion of HCB-treated seed grain in eastern Turkey between 1954 and 1959. The patients who ingested the treated seed experienced a range of symptoms including photosensitive skin lesions, hyperpigmentation, hirsutism, colic, severe weakness, porphyrinuria, and debilitation.

With all of this chemical exposure that we’re unfortunately exposed to, how can you make a difference in your life and for others?

1. Purchase Local

  • Supporting your locals farmers helps them to help you and the community! Operating a farm is a gigantic expense that requires countless hours of dedication to prepare for the seasons and maintain crop production. The more we support our local farmers, the greater ability for them to support our communities, health, lifestyle, jobs, & ancestral food cultivation from Mother Earth!
  • Local Co-Ops are popping up left and right nowadays! Co-Op stands for Co-opportunity. These types of grocery stores are dedicated to serving the community & local farmers by selling local produce, meats, raw dairy, and other exceptional products! Thankfully, I’ve had two great Co-Ops to shop from in the past two cities I’ve made my home 🙂 Kokua Market & Santa Monica Co-Opportunity, thank you for your dedication to providing quality foods for quality health!

2. Purchase Organic

  • If you don’t have a farmers market around you, or your schedule doesn’t allow for you to be at your weekly market, purchasing organic produce from your local health food store is a fantastic option! If you have a Whole Foods, quality food and produce is readily available!

3. Calcium Bentonite Clay 

  • Clays have been used for centuries for their incredible healing abilities in the human body. Calcium bentonite clay has the incredible ability to capture, bind, and draw out toxins that have been stored within the tissues of the body. Especially fatty tissue. In a short science lesson, toxins have a positive charges while calcium bentonite clay has a negative ionic charge. These two opposing charges have the ability to draw out toxins from the bloodstream, binding to the toxin, carrying it out of the body, alleviating any stress on the kidneys or digestive organs during its exit process.

4. Detoxifying Foods

  • Eatings foods that have been shown to detoxify the body is something everyone can do on a daily basis with little  effort! Simple foods that are rich in natural detoxifying agents:
    • Cilantro, Green Tea, Asparagus, Turmeric, Seaweed, Broken Cell-wall Chlorella, Broccoli, Ginger, Fermented Garlic, Artichoke.
      • Eating unprocessed foods from Mother Earth, that’s it!

5. Read Your Labels

  • If your purchasing a food item with a label, read the fine print! Under the listed ingredients, you’ll often find another area that lists, “Other Ingredients.” Take the extra time to make sure there are no other listed excipients or toxic substances in the food you purchase! Remember, you are what you eat! Eating toxic foods makes a toxic body.

The time is now to become informed and take action on your health! I encourage you to purchase organic as much as possible!
